Its all in the prep work. You've heard it a million times. But it is so true even as small a thing as patching a nail hole left ov'er from a picture on the wall. Just a small patch of spackle will "flash thru" te top coat if not primed before applying your finish coat and two top coats will give you a truer color and a much better and more professional job. So allways follow the rules.
